A Poem By Online Student, Kimberly Orvis
I come from a place
where the air feels heavy,
where tomorrow isn’t promised
and the ground shifts beneath my feet.
Where struggle isn’t a moment—
it’s a language I learned young,
spoken fluently in silence.
But even when the world pressed down,
I didn’t fold.
I stitched resilience into my spine,
taught my heart to beat louder
than the noise around me.
Every setback became a scar,
but also a sign—
proof that I survived
what was meant to break me.
Some days the weight still lingers.
Old battles return,
old wounds echo.
Yet I rise anyway—
not because the path is easy,
but because the future I imagine
is worth every tired step.
I push forward
with hands blistered from trying,
with faith held together by threads,
with hope that refuses
to stay buried.
I chase better days
like they belong to me—
because they do.
Because even here,
in the struggle,
I am building something brighter
than the shadows that shaped me.
I’m not done growing.
I’m not done fighting.
My story is not defined
by the place I started,,,

Universal Design: Creating Spaces for Everyone
Universal design represents a revolutionary approach to creating environments, products, and services that work for people of all abilities from the start. Rather than retrofitting spaces with accommodations after construction, universal design integrates accessibility into the initial planning process, benefiting everyone in the community. We at Post University strive to make sure our courses have the Universal Design Approach.
Seven Core Principles in Action
The universal design framework includes equitable use, flexibility, simple and intuitive design, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and appropriate size for approach. On campus, you can see these principles at work in automatic doors that help wheelchair users and students carrying heavy books.
Beyond Physical Spaces
Universal design extends far beyond architecture. In classrooms, professors using multiple formats for presenting information—visual slides, audio explanations, and hands-on activities—create learning environments that work for students with diverse learning styles and abilities. Digital platforms with captions, screen reader compatibility, and intuitive navigation benefit international students, those with hearing impairments, and anyone accessing content in noisy environments.
Economic and Social Benefits
Research shows that universally designed spaces reduce long-term maintenance costs while increasing user satisfaction across all demographics. When we design for the margins, we create better solutions for everyone.
