Post University partnered with the Connecticut Sun on April 7 to host a virtual edition of its Scholar Athletes series. The online event featured the Connecticut Sun President Jen Rizzotti for a discussion titled “Coaching for Parents: A Huddle for Those Raising Scholar Athletes.” Drawing on her unique experiences as a former standout player, college recruiter and coach, AAU coach, and parent of a student-athlete, Rizzotti shared practical guidance for families navigating today’s competitive youth sports landscape. Throughout the session, she emphasized that there is no perfect formula for raising successful student-athletes, but encouraged parents to focus on long-term development, character, and personal growth rather than short-term results.
Rizzotti also provided valuable insight into the recruiting process, helping families better understand what coaches and recruiters look for beyond athletic performance. She stressed the importance of effort, attitude, coachability, and behavior both on and off the court, noting that these qualities often leave a lasting impression on recruiters. During the session, Rizzotti encouraged parents to carefully evaluate AAU and club programs, ask questions about a program’s goals and culture, and help their children learn to advocate for themselves throughout their athletic journey.
A recurring theme throughout the conversation was the importance of balance. Speaking candidly about her own experiences as both a coach and a parent, Rizzotti discussed the challenges of supporting young athletes while allowing them to develop independence and resilience. She encouraged families to prioritize academics, maintain perspective on sports’ role in a child’s life, and focus on creating positive experiences that build confidence and character. The event provided attendees with practical takeaways and recruiter-level insight, reinforcing Post University’s commitment to supporting students and families as they pursue excellence both in the classroom and in competition.
